چکیده

Various low-potential viologen dyes enhance light-induced absorption changes in the nearinfrared region (t.A870) in chromatophore preparations from Rhodospirillum rubrum in the presence of dichlorophenol indophenol and a high concentration of ascorbate (DCPIP + asc). An increase in t.A870 was also observed in large reaction-center preparations from R. rubrum with viologens in the presence of ascorbate. Our results indicate that E~of the primary electron acceptor X may be as low as 0·37 V, as .suggested recently by P. A. Loach (1973, personal communication) .

Photo-oxidations catalyzed by chromatophores of Rhodospirillum rubrum under anaerobic conditions.

In the previous paper of this series (l), some characteristics of the photoreducing system of Rhodospirillum rubrum chromatophores were presented. In one of the experiments described, it appeared that methylene blue was being oxidized in the illuminated reaction mixture. Since such a photooxidation would be an expression of the photooxidizing system of the chromatophore, this reaction was inves...

Observations on the Fine Structure of Spheroplasts of Rhodospirillum Rubrum

Spheroplasts of the photosynthetic bacterium Rhodospirillum rubrum were prepared from cultures grown in either the presence or absence of light. Cells were converted into spheroplasts by using lysozyme and Versene and fixed in a sucrose-veronal-acetate buffer mixture containing osmium tetroxide. Some preparations were shadow-cast and examined whole; others were embedded in Epon 812 and sectione...

Functional interfacing of Rhodospirillum rubrum chromatophores to a conducting support for capture and conversion of solar energy.

Owing to the considerable current interest in replacing fossil fuels with solar radiation as a clean, renewable, and secure energy source, light-driven electron transport in natural photosynthetic systems offers a valuable blueprint for conversion of sunlight to useful energy forms. In particular, intracytoplasmic membrane vesicles (chromatophores) from the purple bacterium Rhodospirillum rubru...

Development and growth of photosynthetic membranes of Rhodospirillum rubrum.

In cell-free extracts from low-aeration suspensions of Rhodospirillum rubrum strain G-9, bacteriochlorophyll a was distributed in two bands after rate-zone sedimentation in sucrose density gradients. From the physicochemical properties of these fractions, it was concluded that the upper band consisted of small membrane fragments, whereas the major band was composed of fragmented vesicular intra...

Resolution of enzymes catalyzing energy-linked transhydrogenation. IV. Reconstitution of adenosine triphosphate-driven transhydrogenation in depleted chromatophores of Rhodospirillum rubrum by the transhydrogenase factor and a soluble oligomycin-insensitive Mg ++ -adenosine triphosphatase.

The catalysis of the energy-linked transhydrogenation reaction of Rhodospirillum rubrum chromatophores is dependent upon a soluble protein, the transhydrogenase factor. This factor can be detached from the chromatophore membrane by the relatively mild procedures of extensive washing, passage of chromatophores through Sephadex G-ZOO, or sedimentation of chromatophores through a dense sucrose sol...
